I am a PhD researcher at the Queensland University of Technology and would like to invite you to participate in a research project exploring aesthetic appreciation in relation to buildings in the urban context of the Brisbane, CBD.
This research aims to extend the knowledge of aesthetic appreciation and judgement in architecture as reflected in the everyday experiences of people in the general public. This research will explore the factors which affect aesthetic judgement in a person’s everyday experience of architecture, through an empirical study. The research will be conducted using qualitative research and analysis. A grounded theory framework will be used for data collecting and analysis. Photo elicitation and in-depth interview are the main research procedures.
Your involvement in the studying will include
1. Taking up to 15 photographs of buildings you ‘Like’ and 15 photographs ‘Dislike’ within the Brisbane CBD. (shaded area on attached map) with your mobile phone or digital camera.
2. Emailing the photographs to me at archappreciation@gmail.com. Please separate your photographs into two folders; Like-folder and Dislike-folder.
3. Participating in an informal-interview of approximately 45 minutes discussing the photographs which I will print and bring to the interview. The place for the interview will be discussed later.
I am looking for three different groups of participant.
The first group comprises local people who have lived in Brisbane for at least 12 months and are
familiar with buildings in the Brisbane CBD.
The second group will involve visitors with little or no familiarity with the buildings in the Brisbane CBD.
The third group will be architects and architecture students who have backgrounds in art or
architecture and who have lived in Brisbane for at least for 3 months.
If you fall within one or more of these groups and would like to participate or have any questions please contact Thirayu Jumsai na Ayudhya directly – email (archappreciation@gmail.com or thi.jumsai@student.qut.edu.au) or mobile 0406-307-377
The interview will be audio-taped video-recorded and later transcribed, but all comments and responses are
anonymous and will be treated confidentially at all times.
I will be conducting the research and will schedule a convenient time over the next few months for your participation. Thank you for considering participating in this research project – I look forward to hearing from you.
